Artist Bio
Denise first fell in love with clay in high school art class, and it was a key factor in her decision to major in Fine Arts during college. She received her BFA from UMASS Lowell in 2006, with a focus on studio art and sculpture, and a minor in Art History. But then life took some unexpected twists & turns, pulling her away from clay from the better part of a decade.
In 2015, Denise found her way back to clay at Mudflat Studios in Somerville, and for the next five years, pottery remained a hobby, using studio time as a way to wind down outside of work, and to connect with other artists.
Switching from hobby to side-hustle in the fall of 2019, rebranding as Seacoast Ceramics, she laid the groundwork to level-up in the future. When Covid hit, Denise found herself without access to a studio, so like many artists, decided to bring the studio home. She bought her first wheel, and spent evenings throwing outside on her patio.
From 2021 through 2023, Denise was working out of two studios (Mudflat Studios in Somerville, and Clay Dreaming in Beverly,) and had also upgraded her in-home setup to support additional time on the wheel. It was clear the time had come to transition into her own studio space.
When life threw another curveball in February 2024, Denise took the opportunity to leave her ~20 year career in tech, and do pottery full-time. Her experience as a Corporate Learning & Development and Enablement Program Manager proved to be beneficial for teaching pottery as well. Denise is able to leverage that knowledge, adapting her teaching style to best support students of all levels.
